Rath History

Crystal Distribution Services #1 Warehouse complex was once the site of the Rath Packing Company. Crystal acquired the facility in 1984, and immediately began extensive renovation work. The first loads were shipped in 1985.

While you're visiting Crystal, plan to walk over to Rath Park, now being developed next door to our facilities. And, enjoy a walk, run, or bike ride on the scenic nature trail that runs along the Cedar River next to our complex. It connects into the 52 mile-long Cedar Valley nature trail to Cedar Rapids, and to the larger, award-winning, trail system in our community.

Rath Packing Company relocated to Waterloo from Dubuque and operated at this site from 1891-1985. At its peak in 1952 Rath employed 6500 workers in 150 buildings in Waterloo and around the country. The Rath family retained ownership of the company until 1960. With a decline in the national meat packing industry, the company ceased operations in 1985, closing the doors on a century long chapter in the history of Waterloo.
